This week in class we discussed emphasis and contrast and how they affect an interior space. 

Emphasis

The purposeful development of focal points of dominant characteristics within a space. This establishes hierarchy within a space. Emphasis can also create an element of story within a space. 

Emphasis creates a feeling of drama, balance and personality within a space. 

Focal points may be created by artwork, architectural details, furniture lighting or a beautiful view outside.

Emphasis determines how a viewer perceives or feels about a space and can have a lasting impression. 


Contrast

Cohesiveness is important in a design scheme, but too much of the same risks everything blending together into a flat, monotonous space. 

Contrast adds the balance needed to bring a design concept to completion.

Contrast can be achieved by placing two or more elements with opposing characteristics together in a space. It can be accomplished using a variety of design aspects, such as color, shape, size, material, texture or style. 

When used correctly, contrast can add a dose of visual interest to an interior space, while simultaneously pulling it together. it can also be used to highlight certain room features or other design elements.

In class, we have been learning about the elements of interior design. We talked about point, which is the basic element and also one of the most important components since it is usually the first thing people notice. It can create a stable visual field and create balance when placed in the center, or it can create tension when having it offset. We talked about lines and the different types of lines, which are horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved. Horizontal Lines give the illusion of more space and provide a sense of stability. Vertical lines create a grander space and suggest an upward movement. diagonal lines create unbalance and symbolize movement. Blog 6: Rhythm and Emphasis

  In class this week, we went over the principles of interior design. It is important for any designer to understand them. The principles of interior design are the rules and guidelines that designers follow to create functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces. The seven main principles of interior design are balance, harmony, rhythm, proportion and scale, emphasis, contrast, and details. Balance Balance is critical to feeling a sense of equilibrium in a space. It is about visually achieving balance by strategically placing different items within a space. You can use shape, color, and texture to achieve balance. Color, Light, and Shadow

                      This week we learned all about color. We also had a guest speaker that talked about paint and how color is affected. HUE is the attribute of a color by virtue of which it is discernible as red, green, etc., and which is dependent on its dominant wavelength, and independent of intensity or lightness. VALUE A gradation or variety of a color; int and shade: The property of light by which the color of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or yellow in reference to the spectrum. SATURATION or Chroma: highly saturated colors are bold, bright, clear, and pure, while lass saturation makes a color soft, muted, toned-down or dusty. METAMERISM is the phenomenon that occurs when color changes under different light sources. LIGHT REFLECTIVE VALUE (LRV) measures the amount of light a paint color reflects.
