This week for class we met with our groups to discuss how our progress was going with the container project. We talked about our precedent studies as well as our diagrams and our ideas for our own project. My precedent studies were Container of Hope and The Boho Box Hop. I realized after listening to my group’s presentations that there are more rooms I should include in my container home, like an extra bedroom and half bathroom, storage space, and laundry room. I also realized that I should experiment with the placement of my containers. For my project, I am choosing a location in Southern California and using a neutral color palette.

This week in class we discussed emphasis and contrast and how they affect an interior space.  Emphasis The purposeful development of focal points of dominant characteristics within a space. This establishes hierarchy within a space. Emphasis can also create an element of story within a space.  Emphasis creates a feeling of drama, balance and personality within a space.  Focal points may be created by artwork, architectural details, furniture lighting or a beautiful view outside. Emphasis determines how a viewer perceives or feels about a space and can have a lasting impression.  Contrast Cohesiveness is important in a design scheme, but too much of the same risks everything blending together into a flat, monotonous space.  Contrast adds the balance needed to bring a design concept to completion. Contrast can be achieved by placing two or more elements with opposing characteristics together in a space. It can be accomplished using a variety of design aspec...

Blog 6: Rhythm and Emphasis

Image
In class this week, we went over the principles of interior design. It is important for any designer to understand them. The principles of interior design are the rules and guidelines that designers follow to create functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces. The seven main principles of interior design are balance, harmony, rhythm, proportion and scale, emphasis, contrast, and details. Balance Balance is critical to feeling a sense of equilibrium in a space. It is about visually achieving balance by strategically placing different items within a space. You can use shape, color, and texture to achieve balance. The three types of balance are symmetrical or formal, asymmetrical or informal, and radial.     Symmetrical/Formal:     Symmetrical balance is achieved when visual elements are arranged on both sides of a center line in equal weight.     Asymmetrical:     Asymmetrical balance is when two sides have different visual weights, but st...

This week in class, we had a guest speaker again teach us about how color is perceived by different people. Different age groups are attracted to different colors. For example, young children are attracted to bright colors and often use the three primary colors. She also compared the different generations and how colors have changed over the years. The colors used during the great depression are very different from the colors used in the 70's. Each culture also views colors differently. We can use the color red as an example. Red can signify passion and anger. In China and India, it is used as good luck and long life, but in Africa is represents death. Color is not universal; everyone has their own perception of every color. As interior designers, understanding different generations or cultures can help us understand the clients that we are working with. Everything begins with the client and what is important to them.  Some key points from her presentation: - Response to col...

Color, Light, and Shadow

Image
This week we learned all about color. We also had a guest speaker that talked about paint and how color is affected. HUE is the attribute of a color by virtue of which it is discernible as red, green, etc., and which is dependent on its dominant wavelength, and independent of intensity or lightness. VALUE A gradation or variety of a color; int and shade: The property of light by which the color of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or yellow in reference to the spectrum. SATURATION or Chroma: highly saturated colors are bold, bright, clear, and pure, while lass saturation makes a color soft, muted, toned-down or dusty. METAMERISM is the phenomenon that occurs when color changes under different light sources. LIGHT REFLECTIVE VALUE (LRV) measures the amount of light a paint color reflects. Scale: 0 (absolute black, absorbing all light) to 100 (pure white, reflecting all light.) REFRACTION ...

Plane, Texture, and Pattern

Image
This week's topic is plane, texture, and pattern.  In class, we talked about the influence that light has on a space. We compared the difference between natural light and man-made light. Light can be broken down into the categories of ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting, and mood lighting. Light can change how the environment feels. For example, an office requires bright lighting, but a living room uses softer lights. Natural light can also be manipulated according to the type of lighting that you are looking for. Beyond its functional purpose, light has the ability to set the mood and atmosphere of a space while defining color, line, and texture.  Color also has an impact and works with elements of design which are space, line, form, shape, texture, and light, to create the desired visual effect. Like lighting, color can also change the environment and how the space feels. The colors that you choose can make people feel cheerful, calm, or welcome. We discus...

INT270 Elements of Design

Image
In class, we have been learning about the elements of interior design. We talked about point, which is the basic element and also one of the most important components since it is usually the first thing people notice. It can create a stable visual field and create balance when placed in the center, or it can create tension when having it offset. We talked about lines and the different types of lines, which are horizontal, vertical, diagonal, and curved. Horizontal Lines give the illusion of more space and provide a sense of stability. Vertical lines create a grander space and suggest an upward movement. diagonal lines create unbalance and symbolize movement. Curved lines create a more gentle movement compared to diagonal lines and there are formal and informal curved lines. We also discussed planes. They help us create depth by using walls, ceilings, and floors. Space and volumes consist of multiple planes that are joined together and this creates space and form. There is positive spac...
