Color, Light, and Shadow

This week we learned all about color. We also had a guest speaker that talked about paint and how color is affected.

HUE is the attribute of a color by virtue of which it is discernible as red, green, etc., and which is dependent on its dominant wavelength, and independent of intensity or lightness.

VALUE A gradation or variety of a color; int and shade: The property of light by which the color of an object is classified as red, blue, green, or yellow in reference to the spectrum.

SATURATION or Chroma: highly saturated colors are bold, bright, clear, and pure, while lass saturation makes a color soft, muted, toned-down or dusty.

METAMERISM is the phenomenon that occurs when color changes under different light sources.

LIGHT REFLECTIVE VALUE (LRV) measures the amount of light a paint color reflects.

Scale: 0 (absolute black, absorbing all light) to 100 (pure white, reflecting all light.)

REFRACTION Light is retracted differently depending on the surface texture of an object, causing different color impressions.

Hide - Ability of a paint to obscure the surface upon which it is applied

  • Created by the light-absorbing or light-scattering properties of pigments
  • "Dirtier" colors tend to offer better hide in fewer coats

Durability

  • How well the the paint film resists physical degradation from use and environmental conditions - e.g., abrasion, chemicals, scrubbing washing, staining, moisture, UV exposure

Fade Resistance

  • Lightfastness is the fade resistance of paint when exposed to UV rays
  • Some pigments are inherently better at retaining their color

Gloss - Sheen

  • Gloss and sheen are two aspects of the same thing:
  •   The amount of light reflected off a painted surface independent of its color

We learned about how pigment affects paint performance through hide, durability, fade resistance, and gloss-sheen. There are also different qualities that paint has that can help in certain situations. For example, to improve air quality, odor eliminating, and moisture resistant.

  1. Rebeca,
Thank you for a great Blog entry. I can see you learned alot through out guest speaker. You do need to include you sketch for the week. Total Points 45/50
